Featured Poet: Indianna Daveson

Indianna Daveson recently published her debut of poetry, A Handful of Haikus.  We had the opportunity to interview her about her creative process and new book.

Congratulations on the publication of your book A Handful of Haikus!

Thank you so much! I’m so happy to have it published and out for the world to enjoy!

What inspired you to compose a collection of haikus?

I have always loved poetry in it’s many forms, but haikus were always something I have loved to write. I studied them back when I was in school, and I was drawn to the many different ways I could spin words into the framework of 5 – 7 – 5.

What aspect of publishing do you find most daunting? Which is most exciting?

The most daunting aspect of publishing? That’s a tough question. I found the account set-up and financial set-up the most difficult, but the most daunting would probably be the stage I’m in now, sharing and promoting my book for people to buy.

The most exciting part?

I think all of it! Every stage, even down to the tedious editing was exciting for me as I knew I was working towards a dream goal of mine that I have had since I was 7 years old.

What is your favorite style of poetry?

My favourite style? Asking that is asking like mother to choose a favourite child! I love them all! I love writing poetry in a variety of forms, because I feel unrestricted in the ways I can express myself.

You have a background writing poetry, fantasy fiction, screenplay and historical fiction. How do you shift between working in such a variety of styles?

It can be difficult to switch into specific mindsets for each style, because I feel like my work is less impressive when it’s forced, but in every single style I write I believe that it is a chance to explore my creativity and imagine, so I let my heart take the reins.

In the current climate of uncertainty due to coronavirus, where do you find joy?

With all the uncertainty going on in the world right now, I try to find joy in the small things. A message from a friend, my favourite song, as well as reading and writing poetry of course!

What advice do you have for writers considering publishing their work?

My advice for writers considering publishing their work is to be patient. Nothing good ever comes easy or fast. My book has taken years in the making, but through perseverance I have published something I am truly proud of.
